MAKIA and PAHOA Design
- Tiger Canoes have been designed for the discriminating
paddler, for whom appearance, performance and quality
are the most important factors. World champion paddler,
Mark Rigg and Tahitian canoe builder, Jean Claude Brander
teamed up with Tiger in '99 to design Tiger Canoe &
Kayak’s first successful OC-1, the Ono. The hull was
originally designed in Tahiti and then brought to Hawaii
where it was modified with surfing attributes. This
started a new trend..... designing canoes to surf. The
Kolea came next, offering a slightly smaller canoe than
the Ono with excellent surfing capabilities. Both canoes
have their niche, and while designed to perform well
in Hawaii's open-ocean surfing conditions, they were
not necessarily ideal in flat water conditions. The
next challenge came to design a canoe that would perform
well in all conditions.....the boat all canoe builders
strive for and the boat that all paddlers yearn for.
